A sound can conduct me to a particular place or setting. The sound may evoke specific weather conditions that I associate with that place or it may convey a sound from nature or the city. Or something from the past. This happened one day when I pressed a few black keys on the piano. Because the sostenuto pedal was pressed down it created a resonance that transported me back to the place where, years ago, I discovered the piano.
When I am composing these associations disappear. Sounds become independent, transform or develop into motifs. They no longer refer to an extra-musical idea, they become just sound. This process also took place when I was writing Kringen (Circles), Zone and Clockwork. But now the pieces are finished, I am conducted back again: a place, landscape or area.

During the last decade I made several compositions inspired by works of the Spanish painter Alberto Reguera. Three of these compositions - Los Infinitos Caminos, Silencios and Castilla, named after similary titled paintings - are represented on this cd. In the case of Valavond and Siguan our collaboration worked the other way around: the paintings were made after the music.
Whether Alberto Reguera paints spreading plains, distant skies or mysterious seas, he is always fascinated by the innumerable, subtle manifestations of light and colour in nature. In his landscapes one can distinguish two geographical directions. Some paintings emphasize colours like black, white, grey or blue. I tend to think of them as North European. Other works, on the contrary, bring to mind a more South European atmosphere. In these Mediterranean works he uses mainly red, yellow or orange.
The constant tension between north and south - sometimes represented in one work - often inspired me to seek musical translations. My electronic compositions Silencios and Castilla are perhaps the most evident examples. These pieces are designed to be explicit representations of this dichotomy.
